The market offers a really good mix of food, drinks, live entertainment, and holiday shopping, making it a great spot for seasonal outings.

And while you’re there, be sure to check out the massive Christmas tree, gorgeous light displays, and even holiday treats like mulled wine or sweet pastries.

Not only will you find a mix of food vendors and stalls, but the specialty shops in the Distillery District also offer holiday items and seasonal treats.

It really is an awesome place to explore if you are looking to get into the holiday spirit.

Things to Do at the Toronto Distillery Winter Village

With so much to see and do, the Distillery Winter Village offers something for everyone.

Whether you’re there to shop, eat, or simply enjoy the holiday atmosphere, it’s a lot of fun for the entire family!

1. Admire the Christmas Tree

One of the biggest attractions at the Winter Village is a 55-foot silver fir designed by Christian Dior.

Decorated with thousands of lights and ornaments, it’s impossible to miss.

The tree looks beautiful during the day, but it’s even more gorgeous when lit up at night.

If you want a nice family photo with the tree, it’s not going to be easy! We found that it was one of the most photographed spots in the village.

2. Visit Santa’s Village

Santa’s Village is a must-visit, especially for families with younger children.

This year, Santa can be found indoors in the Soulpepper Theatre atrium.

This is awesome, as in previous years we had to wait outside (sometimes for close to an hour) in the cold. Then, we had to take our Santa photos with bulky winter coats on!

But as in previous years, you will also find Santa strolling around the Winter Village, greeting visitors and spreading holiday cheer along with his band of elves!

3. Enjoy the Gorgeous Christmas Décor

The Winter Village truly transforms the Distillery District into a Christmas wonderland.

You’ll find 7-foot-tall snowpeople, the illuminated “Big Heart,” and a fun “Countdown to Christmas” sign.

Not to mention, the lovely wooden stalls and the millions of twinkling lights that you will see all over the market.

I always feel like Christmas is in the air while strolling through this market.

4. Indulge in Seasonal Treats

We are a foodie family. And nowhere is this more clear, than when we visit a Christmas Market!

And the Distillery Winter Village does not disappoint! Food lovers will have plenty to enjoy with seasonal treats available throughout the market.

Vendors serve up delicious options like mini pancakes, gooey raclette, loaded poutine, and gourmet grilled cheese.

We enjoyed the Bratwurst on a bun (big surprise there) and the potato Tornados (spiral potatoes) during our last visit.

We have even chosen to have dinner in one of the many restaurants in the Distillery District. This was a perfect option on a truly chilly night.

5. Warm Up with Hot Beverages

There’s nothing like a hot drink to keep you warm during a winter outing.

You can sip on hot apple cider, mulled wine, or creamy hot chocolate from the many vendors.

If you’re a chocolate lover, don’t miss the decadent drinks at SOMA Chocolatemaker, located right in the Distillery District. The hot chocolate was to die for!

6. Shop for Unique Gifts

With over 85 local merchants and seasonal vendors, the Winter Village is a treasure trove of holiday gifts.

You’ll find everything from fashionable accessories to gourmet food items, unique art pieces, and of course, plenty of stalls selling Christmas ornaments and decor.

It’s a great place to pick up something special for everyone on your list.

In fact, I was able to add to my German Christmas ornaments collection! We found a booth selling ornaments made in Germany that were absolutely exquisite.

7. Enjoy Live Entertainment

If you enjoy live entertainment, then you will be happy to know that music definitely fills the air at the Winter Village.

You will find the McGregor Carollers performing traditional holiday songs every evening.

You will also come across musicians playing Christmas songs in several different locations across the market.

Don’t forget to head over to the Soulpepper Theatre for an unforgettable night of music.

With over 50 cast members from four iconic Mirvish Productions (including The Lion King), it should be a night to remember.

The setlist will feature hit songs from all four shows and a few popular holiday classics. And did I mention that it’s FREE with your admission ticket!!

If you are looking to take the perfect family Christmas photo, or even something epic for the ‘Gram, the Winter Village offers endless photo opportunities.

Highlights include the Aurora Borealis light show and vintage Santa sleigh setups, angel wings, the Family Wreath, 7’ tall snowpeople, and soooo much more.

We had a blast taking some fun photos during our trip to the Winter Village. But just a heads up, you will be waiting in line at many of the popular photo spots.

But when you really think about it, the combination of historic architecture and Christmas lights makes the Winter Village one of Toronto’s most Instagrammable spots during the holidays.

9. Participate in Family Activities

If you are visiting the Distillery Winter Village with kids, there are plenty of activities to enjoy.

Kids can write letters to Santa at the North Pole Post or explore the new indoor Santa’s Village.

How to Get to the Distillery Winter Village

Getting to the Distillery Winter Village is easy, especially if you are using public transit (which we DEFINITELY recommend).

TTC (Toronto Transit Commission)

From Union Station: Take Line 1 (Yonge-University) to King Station. Exit at Yonge & King East, Southeast Corner. Then, take the 504A King Streetcar eastbound and get off at the Distillery Loop.
Alternative Route from Union Station: Take the 121 Esplanade-River bus at Front Street & Bay Street East. Get off at Mill Street & Trinity Street.
From King Street West: Take the 504A King Streetcar eastbound and get off at Distillery Loop.
From Queen Street East: Take the 503 Kingston Road streetcar to King Street & Sumach Street. Then, switch to an eastbound 504A King streetcar and get off at Distillery Loop. Alternatively, from King Street & Sumach Street, you can walk south for about 5 minutes to the Distillery District.
From Broadview Station: Take the 504/504 King/Dundas to King Street & Sumach Street. Transfer to an eastbound 504A King streetcar and get off at Distillery Loop. Or, from King Street & Sumach Street, walk south for about 5 minutes to the Distillery District.
From Castle Frank Station: Take the 65 Parliament bus to Mill Street. Please note that Castle Frank Station is not accessible.

GO Transit

Take GO Transit to Union Station. From there, you can walk or use the TTC. Plan your trip using Triplinx to find the best available route.

By Car

With ongoing construction and development in the area, parking is extremely limited.

As we mentioned above, we would strongly encourage you to take public transit or a rideshare service.

Bike Share Toronto has stations near the Distillery District, making cycling a convenient option.

The best time to visit the Distillery Winter Village depends on your preference for crowds and atmosphere.

Weekdays: If you want to avoid crowds, visit Monday through Thursday. Mornings and early afternoons are quieter, giving you more space to explore and enjoy the decorations.
Evenings: For a festive vibe with twinkling lights and live entertainment, visit in the evening. The market looks magical after sunset, especially with the Christmas tree and light displays.
Early in the Season: Visiting in mid-November or early December means smaller crowds compared to the busy weeks leading up to Christmas.
Special Events: If you enjoy live performances or unique activities, check the schedule for special events happening throughout the season.

Avoid peak times like weekends in December if you prefer a more relaxed visit.

Are There Public Toilets at the Market?

Yes, there are several public restrooms available throughout the Distillery Winter Village.

We found there to be clear signage directing visitors to their locations.

Many restaurants and cafés in the area also have restrooms. Keep in mind, that these are for paying customers only.

What is the Weather Like in Toronto, Canada in December?

In December, Toronto is cold, with daytime highs around 1°C and nighttime lows around -3°C.

Snow is pretty common at this time of the year, and the wind can make it feel even colder (windchill is no joke).

It’s winter weather, so be prepared for icy sidewalks and shorter daylight hours.

We would highly recommend dressing warmly or visiting the market may not be much fun.
