It’s a natural concern when exploring a new place or when considering it a potential city to move to.

Having been born and raised in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), as well as raising our family there, Hubby and I are quite familiar with what an awesome city Toronto is. We are also aware of its shortfalls.

Common-sense precautions, such as being aware of your surroundings and securing your belongings, are always a good idea, especially in crowded touristy places.

But if you are a seasoned traveller, this should not be a new concept. Even if you are just coming into the city from some of the smaller surrounding towns, you need to be more aware.

And just like any other large city within North America, neighbourhoods vary. So it’s smart to do some research and stick to well-lit areas, especially at night.

Unfortunately, Toronto has a pretty big homeless population, which may put off newcomers to the city. Just be careful and respect their personal space.

Some of the bar areas can also get quite rowdy at night, especially after sporting events, so you may want to avoid them.

Weather

Another thing that tourists need to think about, which many don’t consider when talking about safety, is Toronto’s weather. It gets pretty darn cold here in the winter!

In fact, we often have Extreme Cold Weather Alerts when Environment Canada forecasts a temperature of -15°C or colder.

And during the summer, Toronto can also get dangerously hot. Environment Canada will issue a Heat Warning when it forecasts two or more consecutive days with daytime maximum temperatures of 31°C or warmer.

The other major safety concerns when thinking about weather in Toronto, are thunderstorms and tornados.

Toronto gets hit with some pretty serious thunderstorms during the summer. When warnings are issued, it’s best to head indoors, out of parks, and off the lake.

Downtown Toronto, much like the rest of the city, is generally safe for visitors.

It’s a bustling and vibrant area with plenty of attractions, shops, restaurants, and more importantly, condos. For this reason, you will pretty much find people out and about at all times of the day and night.

The downtown core is also well-patrolled by the Toronto Police. You’ll often find a visible presence of law enforcement.

That said, as with any city center, we would recommend always using common sense. With plenty of homeless people as well as panhandlers around, it’s always a good idea to be vigilant.

Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded places or tourist areas, and be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
