Whenever we head out for a road trip, we love to explore the small towns that are en route to our destination. So, when we came across this little town while heading to Algonquin Park, we definitely wanted to know if there were things to do in Bancroft with kids.

Bancroft, Ontario is a hidden gem located in the heart of the Canadian Shield. This charming town offers a ton of activities and adventures for families of all ages to enjoy.

From hiking to swimming to exploring local museums and shops, Bancroft has a little something for everyone to enjoy.

Is Bancroft Ontario Worth Visiting?

Yes! Bancroft is definitely worth visiting. This charming town is located just 2.5 hours from both Toronto and Ottawa, making it a great destination for a weekend getaway.

Bancroft is a popular destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike. With a variety of things to do in town, as well as activities that are located just a short drive away, there is plenty to keep you busy.

How Do You Get to Bancroft Ontario

The best way to get to Bancroft is by driving.

If you’re coming from Toronto, the most direct route is via Highway 401 and then onto Highway 115/35 North. From there, you can take Highway 7 East toward Peterborough and continue on toward Bancroft.

The drive from Toronto takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic.

If you prefer to travel by bus, there are several bus companies that offer service from Toronto to nearby cities. But you will need to take a taxi to get to Bancroft, adding to the cost.

What is There to Do in Bancroft Ontario with Kids?

There are plenty of fun and family-friendly activities in this charming town that will keep your kids entertained. Here are some of the top things to do in Bancroft with kids.

1. Enjoy a Stroll Along the River

The York River runs through the town, providing a beautiful backdrop for a leisurely walk or bike ride. The Hastings Heritage Trail, located on the western bank of the river, is an awesome multi-use rail trail that stretches for over 100 kilometres.

Once the Central Ontario Railway that ran north from Trenton, today, the route is home to parks, picnic areas, and benches where you can take a break and enjoy the tranquil scenery.

In the summer months, the river is a popular spot for fishing. You may even spot some local wildlife, such as beavers, otters, and various bird species.

2. Shop for Local Treasures

If you’re a fan of hand-crafted local goods and unique souvenirs, then Bancroft is the place to be. The town is home to several shops and markets where you can find one-of-a-kind treasures made by local artists and craftspeople.

From handmade jewelry and pottery to locally sourced maple syrup and honey, everyone will find something they like while shopping in Bancroft.

3. Dig into Bancroft’s History

Bancroft, Ontario has a rich history that dates back to the mid-1800s when the area was first settled by European pioneers.

The town was originally named “York Mills” and served as a hub for the logging industry, with the nearby forests providing a valuable resource for the growing community.

Over time, Bancroft evolved to become a center for mining and agriculture, with several mineral deposits discovered in the surrounding hills.

Today, the town’s history can be explored through a variety of local museums and historic sites, including the Bancroft Mineral Museum, which showcases the area’s mineral wealth and geological heritage, and the Bancroft North Hastings Heritage Museum, which was once the headquarters of the Bronson-Weston Lumber Company.

The murals aren’t too difficult to find. A quick walk through the downtown area and you are sure to spot these eye-catching and beautiful works of art.

5. Refuel with a Cup of Coffee and a Treat

There are several cafes and bakeries located throughout the town that offer delicious, locally-roasted coffee and freshly-baked goodies.

Our favourite was definitely The Muse Gallery & Café. Located on Bridge Street, this gorgeous little café not only offers some amazing coffee and treats, but also has a ton of local artwork displayed on their walls.

The café offers a variety of hot and cold drinks (try the mango-lemonade!), soups, fresh bread, butter tarts, scones, cookies, and more. You will even find several gluten-free and vegan items on the menu.

6. Enjoy the Views at the Eagle’s Nest Lookout

The Eagle’s Nest Lookout is one of the most unique places to visit in Bancroft. Located just a short drive from the town centre, the lookout offers panoramic views of the surrounding hills and forests.

Getting to the Eagle’s Nest Lookout by car is easiest due to the steep climb. Just keep in mind, there is limited parking spots in two areas.

Once you reach the top, there are several short hiking trails to choose from, with the lookout trail being most popular. On a clear day, the views are simply breathtaking, and the beautiful wooden lookout that extends over the rock is an added bonus.

The lookout is especially popular during the fall months, when the leaves on the trees change colors and create a vibrant display of reds, oranges, and yellows.

The site is open from dawn to dusk, and there are portable toilets available in the parking area.

7. Hunt for Gems at Princess Sodalite Mine Rock Shop

If you’re interested in mining and geology, a visit to the Princess Sodalite Mine Rock Shop is a must-do activity in Bancroft.

Located just outside of the town, this unique attraction offers visitors the opportunity to hunt for their own gems and minerals, as well as browse a wide selection of locally-sourced rocks and crystals in the on-site rock shop.

The mine is home to several beautiful minerals, including the distinctive blue Princess Sodalite.

Be sure to wear closed hiking boots or runners, and come prepared with your own safety glasses, hammers, and chisels if you want to “mine-your-own” gems. Unlike our visit to the Amethyst Mine Panorama in Thunder Bay, here, you actually have to pound away at stones in the yard to find your perfect piece.

But the kids had an absolute blast (Ha!) mining their own treasures, and it was definitely one of our favourite Bancroft attractions to visit.

8. Have a Picnic at Millenium Park

Millenium Park is located in the heart of the town, alongside the York River.

This scenic park is home to a short walking trail, picnic benches, washrooms, a public water tap, and a bandshell. In the summer months, you can even enjoy live music.

Millenium Park offers lush green lawns and plenty of shaded areas perfect for a family picnic.

9. Admire Some Art at the Art Gallery of Bancroft

The Art Gallery of Bancroft is a charming not-for-profit gallery that features a rotating collection of works by local artists. They also host several special exhibits and events throughout the year.

And don’t forget to browse the gallery gift shop for unique creations made by talented local and regional artists. From original paintings to pottery, textiles and wood, leather, jewelry, art books, art cards, stained glass, you will find it all!

10. Shop Local at the Bancroft Farmer’s Market

The Bancroft Farmer’s Market is open from May through October and offers a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, baked goods, and artisanal crafts made by local farmers and vendors.

Not only can you stock up on delicious and healthy produce, but you can also support the local community and chat with the friendly vendors.

The Bancroft Farmer’s Market also holds indoor markets throughout the off season, usually coinciding with upcoming holidays. From a Christmas market in December, to an Easter Market in April, you will find all kinds of great things in the market.

Most Bancroft events are listed on the town’s website, so you can check there for dates and times to know what is happening and when.

11. Explore Egan Chutes Provincial Park

Egan Chutes Provincial Park is located just a short 15-minute drive northeast from town. This beautiful park features a series of cascading waterfalls and rapids, as well as a couple of hiking trails that wind through the surrounding forests.

Whether you’re looking to do a little photography, have a picnic by the falls, or simply take a leisurely hike through the woods, Egan Chutes Provincial Park offers something for everyone.

Just keep in mind, that although the park is gorgeous, it does not have any amenities like washrooms or picnic tables available.

12. Hit the Playground at Riverside Park

For families travelling with young children, a visit to Riverside Park in Bancroft is a must-do activity.

This lovely park features a large playground that’s perfect for kids of all ages, with plenty of swings, slides, and climbing structures to keep them entertained for hours.

The park also boasts plenty of green space, making it the perfect spot for a game of catch or Frisbee.

You will also find picnic tables, public washrooms, and even a skatepark there.

13. Sample the Sweets at The Chocolate Rabbit

The Chocolate Rabbit features a wide variety of delicious treats, including uniquely-shaped chocolates, locally-sourced honey and maple syrup, and handmade chocolate truffles.

14. Get the Jumbo Scoop at Kawartha Dairy

Trust us when we tell you, no trip to Bancroft would be complete without a visit to Kawartha Dairy!

This beloved local institution has been serving up delicious ice cream for over 85 years. Family-owned and operated, the dairy offers a wide variety of flavours, from classic vanilla and chocolate to more unique options like Moose Tracks, Blue Buried Treasure, and Pumpkin Pie (seasonal).

And if you’re feeling particularly indulgent, be sure to order the “Jumbo Scoop” – a massive serving of ice cream that’s sure to satisfy even the sweetest tooth.

Just a heads up, Hubby, who thinks ice cream should be a food group, was unable to finish the jumbo on his own! Good thing the kids were willing to “help” him finish up!

The park is also home to over 1,500 lakes and 1,200 kilometres of streams and rivers. With options for canoeing, kayaking, and swimming, it is a true paradise for water sports enthusiasts.

And if you are looking to explore on foot, Algonquin has over 1,500 kilometres of trails to discover, ranging from short, easy walks to challenging multi-day hikes.

The park also boasts an abundance of wildlife, including moose, black bears, wolves, and more, making it a truly unforgettable wilderness experience.

17. See the Petroglyphs at Petroglyphs Provincial Park

Petroglyphs Provincial Park is a fascinating park that features the largest known concentration of Indigenous rock carvings in Canada, with petroglyphs that date back over 500 years.

Be sure to visit The Learning Place, which is the park’s visitor centre. There, you will find a ton of information about the petroglyphs.

This beautiful sandy beach is located on the shores of Papineau Lake, just a short drive from Bancroft.

The beach offers warm shallow water and soft sand, making it perfect for kids. You can swim in the crystal clear waters of the lake, build sandcastles on the beach, or simply relax and soak up the sun.

But just a heads up, this beach is in a secluded remote area, so it does not have any facilities.

And if you’re looking to cool off after your hike, the park also features two beautiful sandy beaches and a variety of water activities, such as swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing.
