The Best Outdoor Activities to Enjoy in Mississauga in Winter
1. Go Skating at an Outdoor Rink
One of our absolute favourite ways to pass the time in winter is to go ice skating. It’s something the whole family enjoys, and we can do it together.
Of course, one of the best places to skate outdoors in Mississauga is Celebration Square.
Aside from the fact that it is FREE to skate here, there are soooo many reasons why locals flock to this location.
Not only is the rink pretty big, but it’s well maintained, and there are skate rentals and sharpening services available. The views of the city are pretty awesome too.
You will also find a small cafe rinkside, heated patios, as well as food trucks on the weekend.
The rink is open from 10 am to 10 pm daily.

Newly opened in January 2024, this 220 m skating loop is the perfect place to lace up your skates.
Situated right next to the Credit River, in one of Mississauga’s oldest parks, this family-friendly location can be beat.
The ice skating path is free to use, and you can sit in the newly-refreshed gazebo whenever you need a break.
2. Have Fun Tobogganing
Tobogganing is a wonderful family-friendly activity that is a lot of fun, good exercise, and very budget-friendly.
I have spent many afternoons on snowy hills in parks all over the city with my kids. They loved it as kids, and surprisingly, still enjoy it as teens.
We are fortunate that Mississauga has a ton of parks and green spaces where tobogganing is not just possible, but pretty epic too.
Erindale Park
Offers a variety of slopes suitable for all ages and ample parking, making it an ideal spot for family tobogganing.
Mississauga Valley Park
Features convenient parking and good-sized hills for an enjoyable tobogganing day out.
Huron Park
Has hills that cater to various thrill levels, from gentle slopes for younger children to steeper ones for the daring. There’s also parking available, making it convenient for families planning a day out in the snow.
3. Enjoy a Winter Hike
Winter hiking can be such an enjoyable experience. From the peace of the forests to the subtle crunch of the snow underfoot, it can be very therapeutic.
Mississauga offers several spots where you can go on a winter hike.
My favourite is Riverwood Conservancy. It offers diverse trails that wind through woodland and along the Credit River and is an ideal spot for families.
The area is accessible, with parking available, and there’s no cost to enjoy the trails.
4. Build a Snowman
What is more fun and family-friendly than building a snowman?
All you need is fresh snow, a bit of creativity, and some accessories to bring your snowman to life.
And the best part is, you generally don’t even have to leave home to do it!
Whether it’s in your backyard, a local park, or any open space, it’s a great way to get the kids outdoors and enjoy the fresh air.
5. Go Cross-Country Skiing
Mississauga might not be the first place that comes to mind for cross-country skiing. But there are actually some pretty great spots to glide through the snow without leaving the city.

Erindale Park
Erindale Park is an all-around great place to enjoy the winter season in Mississauga. In fact, it’s one of the best places in the city for cross-country skiing.
The wide trails along the Credit River give you plenty of space, and the scenery is especially beautiful after a fresh snowfall.
It’s a great spot if you’re just getting into skiing because the terrain is mostly flat, with a few gentle slopes to keep things interesting.
Jack Darling Memorial Park
Skiing with a lake view? Yes, please!
Jack Darling Memorial Park is a fun spot to cross-country ski.
The open tree-lined paths make for a relaxing ski route, and if you time it right, you can catch an amazing view of the Toronto skyline across the lake.
The Culham Trail
If you’re looking for a longer, more challenging ski route, The Culham Trail is a solid choice.
This trail stretches along the Credit River and has a mix of flat sections and gentle hills.
It’s a great spot to get a good workout while enjoying some peaceful winter scenery.
Since it’s not as busy as some of the parks, you might even have parts of the trail all to yourself.

Light Up the Square
Downtown Mississauga kicks off the holiday season with this annual event at Celebration Square.
The massive Christmas tree lights up, there’s live entertainment, and the whole place is filled with festive music and holiday decorations.
Not only is it a great way to get into the holiday spirit, but best of all, it’s free!
Winter Magic at Celebration Square
Once the tree is lit, Celebration Square stays busy all winter with ice skating, music, and outdoor fun.
You’ll find food trucks, themed events, and sometimes even live DJs on the weekends.
We skated at the Square on New Year’s Day and on Family Day weekend. The place really draws a crowd!
So, if you’re looking for a fun winter atmosphere, this is the place to be.
Streetsville’s Christmas Celebrations
Streetsville always gives me that Hallmark Christmas movie vibe. And this historic village knows how to do Christmas right.
The main event is the Streetsville Christmas in the Village Festival, where you’ll find holiday lights, outdoor markets, and live entertainment.
There’s also a tree lighting ceremony, horse-drawn carriage rides, and visits with Santa.
The center of town is closed off, creating a family-friendly pedestrian-only area. Our kids enjoyed trying the taffy in the snow, riding down the toboggan luge, and playing a variety of games (like giant Connect 4) in the street.
It’s a lot of fun and a great way to support small businesses and local vendors.
Mississauga’s New Year’s Eve Celebration
Want to ring in the new year outdoors?
Celebration Square throws one of the biggest parties in the city, with live performances, skating, and a fireworks show at midnight.
Bundle up, grab some hot chocolate, and enjoy the countdown!
7. Be Amazed by the Lights at Illumi
Illumi in Mississauga is a must-see outdoor light festival that transforms the night into a dazzling world of over 20 million lights.
Spread across an area as big as 10 football fields, it features an awesome Tree of Lights and 16 magical universes, making it a truly epic multimedia journey.

I love quiet winter trails and snow-covered scenery. If this is the type of winter walk that you are looking for, we have some perfect spots to share.
Riverwood Conservancy
Riverwood Conservancy is a great spot for a winter walk.
As we mentioned earlier, the trails wind through forests, open fields, and along the Credit River.
It’s a peaceful place, especially after a fresh snowfall.
You might even spot some deer or woodpeckers if you’re lucky.
Meadowvale Conservation Area
This is one of those underrated winter spots in Mississauga.
The trails here are quiet and follow the Credit River, making for a scenic snowshoeing route.
In our experience, not as many people use this trail in the winter as some of the more popular spots. This makes it perfect if you are looking to avoid the crowds.
If there’s been a big snowfall, bring your snowshoes and enjoy the untouched trails.
Rattray Marsh Conservation Area
If you love winter walks with a view, Rattray Marsh is the place to go.
The boardwalk makes it an easy walk, even when there’s snow on the ground, and it leads to some of the best waterfront views in the city.
This trail is also a great spot for birdwatching—lots of chickadees, woodpeckers, and even the occasional owl.
9. Do Some Winter Photography
Our youngest son has taken a real interest in photography (not surprising since I grew up with a camera in my hand as well).
So I can confidently say that winter in Mississauga provides some pretty spectacular photo opportunities.
Kariya Park in the Snow
This little Japanese-style garden looks like a winter postcard after a snowfall.
The wooden bridge, frozen pond, and traditional gate all stand out against the white snow.
This little hidden gem is a perfect place for some unique photography, and if you go early in the morning, you’ll likely have it all to yourself.
Lakefront Promenade Park
If you love waterfront shots, Lakefront Promenade Park is a must.
Between the frozen shoreline, icy waves, snow-covered boardwalks, and pretty nice sunsets, there is plenty of opportunity for some spectacular photography.
If you’re into bird photography, keep an eye out for swans and ducks that stick around even in the colder months.
Streetsville Village Square
For a mix of historic charm and festive lights, head to Streetsville.
I love how the old buildings look with a dusting of snow! During the holidays, the square is decorated with lights, making it a great spot for nighttime photography.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to spend a winter evening, the Coldest Night of the Year walk is a great event to join.

LaDiperie in Streetsville is one of our favourite stops after an afternoon of tobogganing.
Right across from the Cenotaph, this spot serves up more than just ice cream—you can also grab mini donuts, cake, and other sweet treats.
Their 10oz hot chocolate is a treat on its own! With a dipped rim, a generous swirl of whipped cream, and a drizzle of caramel or other toppings, it’s the perfect way to warm up after some winter fun!
Archtop Coffee Bar
Tucked away in the heart of Port Credit, Archtop Coffee Bar combines a love for music and great beverages.
Their hot chocolate is a customer favourite. It has the perfect balance of sweetness and cocoa richness. Yum!
The café has a really unique ambiance, with vinyl records hanging on the walls, making it a really cozy spot to enjoy your drink.
Halo Espresso Bar
This cozy café in Cooksville serves up a deliciously smooth hot chocolate made with high-quality cocoa.
It’s not too sweet, making it perfect for those who like a more balanced chocolate flavour.

Our best advice is to dress in layers.

This way, you can adjust as needed if you get too warm.
Waterproof Boots
Snow and slush are a given in Mississauga’s winter, so a good pair of waterproof boots with a solid grip will keep your feet warm and dry.
Insulated boots are best, especially if you’ll be out for a long time.
Hat, Gloves, and Scarf
A warm hat is a must since a lot of body heat escapes through your head.

🥾 Insider Tip – Since our son always complains about having cold hands, we always tuck some Hot Paws hand warmers in his mitts. They also work great in boots to keep your toes toasty!
